Chapter 1 Benefits of Inclusion-Due Oct 5

I think in the classroom with the student in the class room gives them a chances too stay up with the other students instead of separet lessons so that they feel important in the school to fit in we have a good system where students talk and interact with each other nicely and in a friendly manner which is good also have some in sports

    1. I agree mostly with your statement but some children are not capable of the lessons that the entire class is doing so some modifications need to be in place.

    2. There are many benefits to inclusion, the Sped tern grows, learns how to handle his /her fears of not being around its Sped class mates.

      I agree with you on the part about the students participating in sports. I have seen a few schools (smaller schools) letting their special education students play in sports. I am so exited to see some of this special education students playing sports. There are several schools in this area. Hurray for those schools!

    4. Yes! I think it is very important to include our students in a general classroom with other students. Eventhough all students have different academic levels, that doesn't mean we have to make some feel more less than others. This not only applies to general classrooms but also extracurricular activities.

    5. I agree with you but we also pull each one of our students out each day for a little one on one time to work on what they are struggling with.

  2. I think the student being in the class room bosts their sel-esteem and helps them with their interaction with other students in their class. The student knows that there is help for him or her if they need it. They feel like they are not labled as much as if they were in a seperate class.

    1. This is true Pam! I notice that our sped kids "fit right in" with the rest of their classmates; which helps them to do better work. Of course some cannot do any better than their able to but they still are a part the group. I am pleased to see the "other kids" reaching out the sped kids to help them with their class work and help from paras is there when they need it.

    2. I agree with this whole-heartedly, Pam. I've noticed that some of my students perform better just knowing I am there to help them. They are more confident when they know if they have trouble, all they have to do is ask and I will be there to help them.

  3. I think if you leave a child with disabilities in thier classrooms were there classmates it makes them feel like they are important and nobody singles them out for being different.

    2. I agree with also Erica. It is important for the sped kids to feel accepted as a part of the class. Nobody likes to be "set apart as different" for any reason!

    4. I agree with you Erica. I like that SPED kids can stay in the classroom with their peers and do stuff with them. It does make their self esteem go up and it makes them feel just like everyone else when they are included in things. It makes me sad when others make fun of kids with disabilities.

    6. I do agree but sometimes it is hard for the kids to feel accepted when they are having trouble with work I feel most of the time but if they do feel accepted then they work harder to acomplic

  4. Benefits of inclusion is having the student in the same classroom with his or her peers. There are enough labels out there for children anyway and having them included in the classroom would be one way a child would feel better about themself.

    3. I really like how you bring up the subject of labels. I agree that with the process of inclusion, labels should begin to be used less and less. That is very much a postive.

    4. I agree that the student will feel better about themself being a constant part of the classroom. We can re-lable them as a "good listener", "good student", "hard working".... We rarley hear the "positive reinforcement" lables.

    5. Yes, it decreases the labels. I like how Kerri is putting some new labels out there. It would do ALL the kids a world of good to get one of Kerri's labels. Also, tell the students how PROUD you are of them. How IMPRESSED you are with their work and work-ethic. These small words can mean the difference between success and failure.

    6. Even with students with special needs. I believe it is beneficial for them because I know it has helped out student respond to others more since he can "talk" with his peers.

  5. Inclusive education benefits the majority of students. I have noticed that having the sped students in the classroom with the other students brings out the willingness of the other students to work with the sped kids. The sped kids are accepted and the other kids will help them with assignments and in-class work without being asked. This makes the sped kids feel like they a part of the "whole" class and not just the "special" kids.

    2. I definately agree with you on this. I've noticed that the sped kids do feel more important and confident. I have noticed that if I'm in the classroom with them I see that they are comfortable with their peers. They know I am still there if they need me.

    3. I have also seen that the SPED kids take on the good behavior of fellow classmates. The general education students tend to be more thoughtful toward the SPED kids & make a sincere effort to help them feel included. Nice to see in todays world.

  6. I chose the last benefit which talks about inclusive education benefits the majority of students when two (or more) adults work together in the classroom. I feel that it is beneficial for students with disabilities because not one person is responsible for the student that needs assistance. The adults come together as a team and make it possible for the students with disabilities to participate and feel like they are a functioning part of the classroom.

  7. A student being involved n a classroom has far more benefits than not having the child being involved. Their selfesteem and motivation goes up and they as a person do not feel labeled or left out.

  8. I believe, based on my own experiences, that inclusion benefits all students in the classroom. Every student learns differently and at different speed, students in SPED just need a little more help in certain areas. I believe the social skills of students in SPED are positively developed when included in the general education classroom. I also believe that by having students that are SPED in the general education classroom, it helps the students in general education to develope patience, understanding and appreciation for all types of people. The benefits of inclusion are proven and evident.

  9. Being in the classroom with their peers is a benefit. Its important for them to feel included in the activities the class is doing although some stuff might be difficult for them to do. I've noticed a few times at my work that some kids don't know the person they are talking to might be a SPED kid and I have seen their classmates defend them which I think is a really great thing.

      Yes, the students in their classroom seem to defend each other in time of need. Some students like to bully the under achievers’ but when they have their class to depend on it makes it easier for the student. We, as parents need to teach our children that we are all caring people and need everyone to be successful.

  10. I think it does benefit the sped kids to be in the classroom as much as possible. They get the interaction of their peers so they don't feel singled out. When I am in the classroom with them I have learned to not sit by them but to watch them so if they have a question they know I am there to help.

  11. I chose the 4th benefit because of the student I work with. It is a team effort to help her have a successful school day. It is all of us as team members learning by doing. Over the course of the school year we have come to understand the silent signs of this student by working with her. No one could tell us how to work with her at inservice meetings because she interacts differently with different people. So it is very much on-site training. Not all SPED kids come from the same circumstances & are each unique. Inclusive behavior does improve the quality of on-site training & we don't have to sit in meetings to learn how to work with thses students.

    1. There is not really any training that one can do to prepare oneself to work with special needs kids. The best training is total immersion with that student. Even if one has worked with a down syndrome student, autistic student, adhd student, etc. the next down syndrome student that comes could be totally different.

  12. The most important benefit of inclusion to me is that the special education student gets the benefit of a highly qualified general education teacher as well as a special education support. This is especailly important a the high school level where the level of expertise is much greater than at the elementary level. It is wonderful to have a team of educators that can get the kids what they need to learn.

  13. Inclusive education benefits the majority of students. When we are in a classroom our job is not only to help that specific sped student we are there to help every student who needs it that way our kids feel less embarressed to ask for help.

  14. The most beneficial thing to me is that "inclusive education benefits the majority of students." With more than one adult in the classroom, it is easier to help all of the students with questions. A lot of the times, you are helping your SpEd student, an another student or couple of students also have the same question, so they listen and learn along with the SpEd kid. The SpEd kid likes knowing that they are not the only one that needs help.

  16. When the teacher and the para are on the same page and work well todether this benefits the students greatly! Sometimes there is not always great team work and the children could suffer. Teamwork is very important with all the people that are involved with the students learning no matter the job description.

    1. I agree we have a good team work system going for us where we are and just since the begging we have changed many things to adjust with the kids to see what works best many things but I think we put all our heads together and came up with many different ideals that have been working

  17. Teamwork with the teachers and paras will benefit all of the students not just the sped children. The class will learn to look out for each other and they will not see the differences.

  18. I would say that having team members with knowledge in many diverse areas collaborate to problem solve, the results are achieved more quickly. When there is a student with disabilities, you never really know what to expect or what's going to happen in any given day. Having a team that can work together, with each member offering their own expertise, will help the special needs child, the para, the sped teacher, the gen ed teacher, as well as the class as a whole.

  19. Teamwork is a big part of our special education team, without teamwork our coop wouldn’t be as successful. It takes team players from the top administration to para’s and secretaries. The team-work is essential part of a successful program.

  20. Inclusion to me is the opportunity for our students to learn in the same activities every students do, this means been included in all academic areas. As Para educators we need to support them, and make sure thate ur students have confidence to learn in their abilities and to be successful inside and out of school.The more they socialize the more confident they feel.

  21. Kids with disabilities stay in the classroom because it helps them with some stuff like,their self-esteem, and interaction with other kids. But also the other kids in the room know theres help for them as well.

  22. Communication and collaboration increase with the new educational team. We have a new special ed, teacher and two new paras this year. We have small meetings everyday after school to tell how our day, went if we think certain students need more help in certain subjects, and to learn more ways to approach certain situations.

  23. I like the last benefit because I believe if two people work together can make a big difference on the child life. some times two brains work better that just one. the students can gain more from their peer when they do different strategies for them to learn the lesson.
