    Behavior Management
    Clerical Duties
    Data Collection
    Develop Materials (Under Professional Supervision)
    Health Related Services
    Organization Skills
    Reinforcement of Skills
    Supervision
    Team Participation
Work With Students (Group or Individual)

The areas out of this list I am most familiar with are Reinforcement of Skills, Supervision and Working With Students. I am in the classroom for each hour of the day except intervention so I am mostly involved with these areas.
Though we are not “teachers” we still have the opportunity to “re-teach” our students and reinforce the instruction they receive when they are struggling to “get it”. I can say from my own experience that the kids appreciate us being there for them when they are having a hard time. It is also helpful for the para in that it serves as a “refresher course” (so to speak) for us.
When I have the opportunity to monitor a class I enjoy it. It gives me the opportunity to establish a good rapport with all the students. It also helps the teachers when a Para is able to manage the classroom when they need to leave. The students need to know that the Para is there for all of them and not just their SPED kids.
Para’s communication with teachers and students is essential to the success of all concerned. We are the “link” between them. There are facts about the students that they will share with a para that they aren’t comfortable sharing with a teacher. Sometimes the teacher needs to communicate things to a student and can’t seem to get through to them and a para may be able to help them.
The Para Working With The Students can be a very helpful asset to the teacher. I personally enjoy the opportunity to work with the students in all areas… especially in the sciences when there is “lab work”. There have been times when the students are “stumped” for an idea while working on a certain project or assignment and they ask for an idea to help get them started and the Para can provide just the right thing.

    1. I think the kids do appreciate us too, some kids are afraide to talk to the teacher until they get used to them. So we are there to help them get over the shyness. I agree that with us being in the classroom helps us too, because when you have been out of school for a while you tend to forget things.

    2. I too also feel that no matter the age a student always appreciates the extra help and kindness that comes with helping them "get it." I also agree that it helps certain shy kids get over their fear of talking to elders they do not thoroughly know.

    3. I think the kids appreciate when we keep them on task and help them gather there matrials for homework and the following day.

    4. John,
When you are in the classroom and then reinforce the student it makes it easier. Your are able to refresh your knowledge by been in the classroom, then to be able to reinforce the skills to the student with the teacher ideas and way of teaching. I helps you, help the student better.

    5. I agree John that we as paras are the link between students and teachers. Having worked with all ages, the more time spent with students individually helps with the security the student feels to be able to share things they wouldn't normally feel they could.

    6. I agree with you in regards to being the link between students and teachers. I am the new para at the high school, and realizing that it takes time for the older kids to trust and open up. Time in the classroom is important to me, I can get to know other kids and brush up and refresh. It has been a pleasure to be in the classroom, I look forward to working with the students each day.

    7. The kids see us as another teacher in the classroom and they really appreciate having the teacher and us to help them. Some kids perform better with us there, even if they don't need our help, solely because they know if they get stumped, we will be there to help them.

    8. I agree and am glad to help jump start ideas to my students when they aren't able to think of anything.

    9. I agree with you Pam and Christy! We get to form the bond with the students more than the teacher because we are the ones that works with them the most. I know my students, uncluding gen ed kids I see and help, have a strong bond with me and have gained their trust in me as well. Trust is very important, especially in behavior children because sometimes the behavior shown is due to lack of trust, in my experience.

    10. I agree with you Pam, many kids are afraid to ask questions. So it is very important for us to be with them in the classrooms, and give them full support.

    11. I agree, I am also in the classroom most of the day and I can see the improvement with each child i am with.

  2. Paraproressional's role:
    Behavior Management
    Clerical Duties
    Develop Materials
    Health-Related Services
    Organization Skills
    Reinforcement of Skills
    Supervision
    Team Participation
    Work with Students

The two fields I work with the most is, Working with Students and Supervision. When I work with a student I help him with his daily work and make shure they understand what they are doing. I go to the clases they are in and if they need to we go back to our room to work on the assignment. In supervision I go to the class the child is in and sit with them or close to them. Make shure they act appropriately and communicate with them and make shure they understand the work they are doing. If they dont need my help or another student is helping them I leave them alown.

When communicating with the teacher in the classroom, I ask her if I dont under stand the assignment. Make shure I have the right test they are going to take. When I get back to our room I tell my supervising teacher what they did in class, when tests are and what work they are missing. I also talk to him when I have trouble with a student that does not want to work.
I think communication is very important when working with children and other adults. The teacher wouldnt not know what was going on with the student,if the para did not communicate with the sped. teacher.

    1. So true Pam... our communication with the classroom teacher and the students is so important. There are some teachers who don't take the time to let the para know when the sped student is getting behind until it's a problem for them to get caught up. Fortunately the teachers I work with do a pretty good job of keeping me informed in this way.
My supervising teacher does an excellent job of keeping me informed of the needs of our sped kids. This makes it possible for me to be more helpful to the students and the supervising teacher.

      Delete
    2. Being a teacher and a para, I have seen both sides. I totally agree that communication is crucial, but from both the para and the teacher. A para has the ability to ask if something doesn't seem right before it gets too far out of control such as a kid falling behind on work. Teachers have their hands full so its nice sometimes for a para to remind them once in awhile of the small things :)

      Delete
    3. I had that situation not too long ago. I inquired about one of our students behavior and attitude and the teacher agreed that something was going on. I feel as if we kept the situation from getting out of control. Since then the student has seen the boundries set and has changed his attitude.

      Delete
    4. With some of the children I work with I feel that they have a better communication with the paras then the teachers it is like we are they for their comfort and they feel safer but when we miss a day they get lost but I feel they look up to us more

      Delete
    5. I feel that it is very important to keep communication open between teacher, para, and supervisor so that we all know what is going on.

      Delete
    6. I feel that if you become friends with them then our communication between us is better.

      Delete
    7. Communication is needed because sometimes that is what the teacher has to go off of for meetings and if there was no communication than the teacher doesn't know how the student is doing and it would be pointless for the para to be working with the student if there was no communication whatsoever. We are the go between because the teacher can't service every child on their own. Taking data helps the teacher know what is going on with the students when we, the para, isn't able to communicate every day verbally.

    8. I do the exact things as you. I feel its very important for us to be in the room with our children.

  3. Behavior Management, Clerical Duties, Data Collection, Develop Materials, Health-Related Services, Orgaization Skills, Reinforcements of Skills, Supervision, Team Participation, Work with Students (large and small group or individual) I am a speech and language para mainly i work with just small or individul students. We just got a new student where reinforcement has really helped. I take data on their sounds and their stories. We do a game at the end of their speech time that is our behavior management. I also prepare materals and logs.

    1. In some areas it is good to have small groups of students, then you can give them more help. know what they are having troubble in and understanding.

    2. Melissa, the game or free time at the end of your time is a big behavior management and it works for most students. They are willing to get the work done so they can have fun time.

    3. I feel the behavior managment goal is reached faster and smoother if the child can trust you. If you carry through with what you say you are going to do. I worked in the jr high or middle school last year and that age group is a whole other world. But grade school children seem to be much more receptive to your help and much more enjoyable and fun to work with.

    4. Trust is definetly the one of the biggest factors in these kiddos accepting our help. If they don't trust us, they are less likely to work. And you are so right, Deb, about elem. kids more willing to accept you. I was in 1st and 2nd grade for 6 years. Now is my first year with 7th & 8th. The little kiddos will just take you and run. The MS kids are so much harder to earn that trust. It took a good month before a lot of the kids at the MS this year would fully accept and take my help. When they started coming to me instead of me going to them was a wonderful time. It felt amazing.

A para does not developed lesson plans. The teacher makes the lesson plans and the para reinforces it with the certain students needing the extra help.

A teacher assigns what reading to read and whether or not if it is silent reading. A para then takes the student and reads aloud what needs to be read and better helps the student to understand the text better.

A teacher works with the parents and student to come up with a specific homework plan during the school year. The para only monitors the daily homework plan to make sure the student is following it.

A few ways to communicate are verbal and written. Either with the teacher or to the parents from the teacher. Daily communication is crucial for everyone to stay on the same page with everything. Written notes to go home are always helpful. A para can also do a daily log to help show what the student is doing so communication is easier.

    1. The classroom teacher definitely has the lead role in these areas. The para can be such a help to them in so many ways. They have the training and the experience and we have the contact with the sped students that they can't always give on an individual basis like we as paras can.

The para does not make up the lesson plan. this is the job of the TOR and the supervising teacher. It is our job as paras to follow the direction of the lesson plan to the best of our ability.

the supervising teacher also works out a homework schedule for the student and it is a paras job to help make sure that plan is carried out.

  7. ***The Ten paraprofessional’s roles are:
    1.- Behavior Management
    2.- Clerical Duties
    3.- Data Collection
4.- Develop Materials (under the direction of a supervising professional)
    5.- Health-Related Services
    6.- Organization Skills
    7.- Reinforcement of skills
    8.- Supervision
    9.- Team Participation
10.- Work with Students (large- and small-group or individual)

Data Collection: As a school psychologist secretary/paraprofessional, I do a lot of collecting of information. We collect information from teachers, doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, behavior specialist, speech/language pathologists, students and parents. Also we collect assessment information at the local (ex., AIMS Web, STAR) and state level (state assessments). We collect the information via, telephone, email, mail and personal touch (we make home visits and meet with parents in the office).

Clerical Duties: I deal with this every day. The School Psychologist and I enter data in the FileMaker Pro (A program for student records), and Netiep (Another student records program). We enter the beginning part of the information, and
update information, as well . We enter all the information we get from data collecting.

**Communication is a must in this department. We spend some time talking in the office, emailing, and talking on the phone.

    2. Yes communication is very important, Because it leads to team building among the teachers, students, and para educators.

  8. Communication between teachers and your paras is so important! It seems as if coop-wide, time to meet with paras is an issue that needs to be addressed. It sounds like many issues could be offset by scheduled communication between teachers and paras. The daily schedule and log in this chapter are very well done. My only concern with this form of communication is that we need to make sure that as paras we are not logging when we are supposed to be working with students. I agree that it is a great communication tool, but not at the expense of student contact time.

    Health-Related Services
    Organization Skills
    Reinforcement of Skills
    Supervision
    Team Participation
Work with students (large and small groups or individual)

The two areas I am involved in are: Supervision of students and working with Working with small groups and sometimes individual. I have been making math book with all the other people I work with for three students and I supervise them while they are working. If they are having trouble figuring out the answer I will help them.

Communication is very important especially if a SPED kid is being abused or bullied by their peers. If a para sees this, then its important to report it to the supervising teacher, the general education teacher, and administrator. Communication is also important because it will help the supervising teacher to share with the parent how their kid is doing. I use verbal communication and sometimes written communication.

  10. 10 Roles of a Para: Behavior Management, Clerical Duties, Data Collection, Develop Material, Health-Related Services, Organization Skills, Reinforcement of Skills, Supervision, Team Participation, Work with Students.
In comparison to the roles of the para and supervisory teacher, the para's duties are to reinforce and apply daily activities that the supervisory teacher has planed. The areas that I can relate to most are reinforcement of skills, work with students, and clerical. I am in the general classroom most of the day, reinforcement of skills is applied when needed. I have had the opportunity to work with small groups in the general classroom, i found that it is a good way to get to know the other gen ed students. i provide support in our classroom; make-up work, read aloud, provide support for independent reading, and test taking. I perform clerical duties such as scanning assignments for the student, shredding documents, organizing and updating old files, and answering the phone.
Communication is Key! Forms of communication are written & verbal. As a para - we are the link between the supervisor and the student. We need to keep current on the students so communicating on a daily basis is important. I enjoy the daily-5. I come in a little early so that we can discuss the day ahead. I keep a daily log on assignments, test, and important dates that might need attention. In my work setting email and MBC have been an important communication tool.

  11. The 10 categories of a para's role are:
    Behavior Management
    Clerical Duties
    Data Collection
    Develop Materials
    Health-Related Services
    Organization Skills
    Reinforcement of Skills
    Supervision
    Team Participation
    Work with Students

One of the roles of the supervisor is to set the rules, guidelines, and expectations for the classroom and its the para's role to help facilitate those guidelines and expectations. The para is, in a sense, just an extension of the supervisor. The para is able to give more one-on-one attention to help ensure that rules are being followed and expectations are being met.
Another role of the supervisor is to communicate with the parent/guardian and other team members and its the para's role to help gather the data/information needed regarding the students. The para is usually in a position to get more intimate knowledge of the student's thinking process and behavior and the reasons behind them.

Communication is essential! When you are a part of a team, working toward a common goal, communication is a must. Each team member has to be able to communicate effectively so that everyone else understands. It doesn't matter what form of communication you are using, whether its verbal or written, email or texts, if the person receiving the message doesn't understand what is being conveyed, communication is broken.
In my position, I use daily, verbal communication with my supervisor, teachers, and students. I also have to keep daily data in student's file.

  12. Paraprofessional roles:
    Behavior Management
    Clerical Duties
    Data Collection
    Develop materials
    Health-related Services
    Organization Skills
    Reinforcement of Skills
    Supervision
    Team Participation
Work with Students (lg/ sm groups & individual)

I mainly do behavior management, reiforcement of skills, supervision and working with students.

Supervising teacher comes up with the behavior management strategies. Para implements said strategies, montitors and documents the info.

Supervising teacher determines the lesson objective, provides instruction, and assigns reading assignments. Para helps student to meet objective, helps with learning the skills, and reads aloud to students who need it.

Communication is the only way to succeed in helping our students. Everybody needs to know what is going on and who needs to be doing what with whom or where. The most common way that I communicate with my direct supervising teacher is verbally. This is the most effective because if she misunderstands, she can just ask, whereas you cannot do that with written/emails. It is essential that everybody listens and takes into account what is being said. If one has a concern, and the other does not listen or take it into consideration, communication breaks down, trust may be lost, and this ultimately effects the support the kids get.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree that verbal, face to face communication is best. If my supervising teacher changes schedules, or has a different task for me and I don't 100% understand, I'll ask questions to make sure I get it. Having the dialog verbally is usually better, as one might not get a response right away or it could be misinterpreted when using other methods of communication.

What I do the most is working with students and organization skills. Throughout the day I go to many different clsses mostly math so I make sure the students stay on task, take notes and do the assignments. I also make sure they have their notebooks organized.
Communication is extremely important without it the most affected is the student. Every member of the special ed team needs to be on the same page so the students can have consistency.

The 3 main roles that I'm responsible for are behavior management, reinforcement of skills, and work with individual students. I have a morning inclusion with one student, which I help her stay on task and focused on the general education teacher. Then, I have a different student and classroom in an afternoon inclusion, helping him maintain good behavior and also helping with enrichment activities.

Communication is essential between the para and supervising teacher. We have to be on the same page in regards to the SPED students. It's difficult for me and my supervising teacher to find time for communicating, considering I have an A.M. inclusion, lunch, then P.M. inclusion. We communicate in the morning before school starts, after school, and during my afternoon inclusion student's speech time (2 days/wk). We also communicate by email and text.

  15. I think that our behavior has a big part on the student as a para when we don't know or lack of communication with the teacher does a lot for us and knowing what is going on to keep the children busy and on task is a good thing a lot of the students don't like to work on a lot of work but we try to make it fun so that they will stay busy with their work through out the day and class to class

    2. Making it fun is a great idea. I go with the philosophy that if I'm not having fun the student isn't either. And it's a proven fact that when learning is fun for the student they remember what they learned.

  18. Paraprofessionals' jobs are unique and constantly changing. The paraprofessional has many duties and titles. These duties include but are not limited to:

    Behavior Management
    Clerical Duties
    Data Collection
Develop Materials (under the direct supervision of a professional)
    Health related services
    Organization
    Reinforcement of skills to students
    Supervision of students
    Team Participation
    Work individually with students

This year my supervisor is new, this is his first year in SPED. So we are all leaning on each other to learn what works for each student and implementing those strategies. I believe this has been my funnest year (its my 8th) so far. We have some wonderul students and are able to meet their needs by each working as a team to fulfill their needs.

Communication is essential in every day life. When working in the school setting and especially with our students in special education, communication is a daily necessity, sometimes minutely! It is important to keep our supervising teacher as well sas our fellow paras apprised as to what is going on in a situation that may have come up or with a student who needs extra help or attention. This communication also helps us to work as a team and be on the same page as each other. Communication can be verbal or written. I poersonally keep notes on daily activities and assignments for my students so that I can refer back to them when needed. This also helps me determine if certain behaviors happen at certain times or because of cetain triggers. I can also communicate these things more effectively with my supervisor if I have to notes to refer to. I valuesw communication in the workplace because it makes me feel knowledgable about my job and the expectations of the job.

The 10 catagories of a Paraprofessional:
    Behavior Management
    Clerical Duties
    Data Collection
    Develop materials
    Health-Related Services
    Organization Skills
    Reinforcement of Skills
    Supervision
    Team Participation
    Work with Students
The supervising teacher is responsible for direct instruction, & the para is suppose to carry out those instructions provided. Para's work directly with students, reinforcing previously taught skills, data collection & documentation, & behavior management. May also include lifting, helping students w/ personal care or mobility.

Communication between supervising teachers & Para's is key to the success of the students. Whether its verbal or written there needs to be daily communication & that may need to be several times a day in some cases. I have the opportunity of walking the student I assist with to the car at the end of the day. I take time to let the mother know the fun things we did that day. I may mention we had a rough time with behavior but I don't go into details & I focus on the positive & fun things done in the day. It makes it more personable communication & encouraging that we are accomplishing good things at school. It also helps to hear from parents when my girl is dropped off things they are working on at home so we can reinforce that in school. I do keep a daily journal of the happenings of the day to have a reference point if there are ever questions about what activities were good or not so good.

Data Collection, behavior management, and developing materials are jobs that I do and communicate with my supervisor. I take data so the parents of the student and my supervisor know how the child is doing and what changes can be made to help the student improve on certain goals the student may have. I manage behavior by keeping the student on task and focused on what the student needs to be completing. I also develop materials for pull out students per the request of my supervisor so the students are able to complete the skill that is expected at their grade level, but it is modified to their skill level so they may understand it better.

With all of this I do I communicate with my supervisor either verbally or written so she may know what the students can or can't do and with this she knows what goals the students have mastered or if they need to be updated/changed to better fit the child we are servicing.

    1. I agree with you you have to find a way to talk to you supervisor so both can accomplish the goal for the students.

    -Health Related services
    -Organization skills

I like to have communication with both teachers ; general and special Ed. Teachers. I try my best to talk to the students and help them with their necessities: this way they don't get behind in any class. Because of this I make sure I ask first for permission from the general and special Ed teachers if I can help the students with their homework or assignments that were unfinished. That way I have the opportunity to reteach them and the students also have the opportunity to learn and go at their pace.

I work mostly with behavior management and work with students. My job is to help the child to be on task and to stay focus on classroom. In the afternoons I work with one child to help him with the activities on the classroom, understand the directions.
communication is very important because that's how we can obtain our objective for the success of the child. it is very important to communicate that will make a better relation with you supervisor.

I work mostly with supervision and work with students. Most of my day I'm with a kid that has autism. He is very smart I'm just there to supervise him. Me and my supervisor meet and talk about how our days go throughout the week. We have a very good relationship.
