  1. According to the text the primary difference betwwen addomodations and modifications is the outcome or result.
To be more specific accomodation is providing the equipment or means neccessary for a student to complete assignments in the best way possible for them.
Modification involves a change in content such as what type of presentation, materials, grading or assessments are best for the student. Paraprofessionals do not make modifications but will carry them out under the directions of the supervising teacher.

Question: I do not feel comfortable in some classrooms because I do not know the subject material. What should I do?
I experience this very feeling in Algebra class so I do my best to listen and learn the material the instructor is teaching the class. In this way I can give some help to the student I am assigned to. However when I cannot help the student I make sure to get the teacher to come and help him... as the teacher helps the student I am able to understand it better as well.

    1. Also if the student doesn't feel comfortable you can always take them to a more secure setting and do further and more in depth instruction with him or her. This way might help their confidence level too.

    2. I think this is a good idea because it gives the student a second chance of learning the lesson. Also it gives you a chance to learn how to help the child with math, which I have a hard time in any way.

    3. Letting the student know that we don't always know ALL the answers is not a bad thing. If you let the student know you are learning right along with the student it may make them feel better about themselves too.

    4. I think I would do the same thing, John. Math is not my best subject, so all the help I can get, the better off the students will be. Strive to learn something new each day, you be become a better person for it.

    5. With accommodations the outcome is the same but arrive differs.
On modifications they change the content that does change the end product with different outcome.
Is it ok to work with students who are not special education?

I believe it is to a point, my main objective is to make sure my student(s) know and understand the assignments, then others may also ask for help, it also shows the SPED student that they aren't the only one that needs help.

    6. I have asked the teacher for help "Hey Mr. Teacher I'm not quite understand can you double check the problems we have worked on just to verify we are on track". The teacher is always willing to help.

    7. Yes Deb! I agree with you, I don't think it's a bad thing letting the students know that sometimes we don't know some stuff. It's a way of letting them know that we're learning right with them.

  2. The text book says that the difference between accommodations and modifications is the out come. But in depth, accommodations are tools or objects that help the student learn or make life easer for them (wheelchair, glasses). modifications are what you can do to the students school work to make them more easly understand it(shorten questions on a test or read the test to them).

Question: The student seems to be able to do the work independently, so what should I do during the class period?
I ask the student if they need help if no then I make shure they understand how the teacher explained it if so, then I come back every now and then and make shure he is doing ok. Between that time I make shure the other students I have the help they need too.

    1. If a student is working well independently then let them. Just check to make sure they actually understand then you can make a point to help other students if they need it while still monitoring ur specific student. Kids sometimes need that independence tobknkw they can actually do something on their own without always getting help.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Courtney I usually let them try on their own so they can see if they can do it and if they get stuck they ask for help.

    3. Pam,
Sometimes, the students work by themselves, but don’t follow the right procedure. Even if they think they don’t need help make sure you stand behind them to make sure they follow the right procedure and then go with another student. This way you are making sure they are following the right procedure and you don’t bother Them.

    4. The main goal is for the kids to be able to do things on their own, so yes I agree! I would let them continue working on their own and if they need help, I am there to help in anyway I am able to.

  3. Something I find helpful Pam during the class period when the student is working well on his own is to take good notes. I find that some of my students tend to take "brief notes" and miss some points that they will need to know for unit tests.

    1. I agree that is why I take notes and do the work it helps them in the long run

    2. I also agree it is a good time to take notes!

    3. I always take notes along with the student, then compare on what we thought was important in the text. So next time he/she can improve on note taking.

  4. Accommodations is providing the material needed to help a student learn better.
Modifications is actually changing the content to be learned or study.
Question: if the student feels he/she doesn't know the material as well as the other students and doesn't want to be embarrassed in the classroom.
Answer: when a student tells me this problem, I try and talk with them about their fears to help them realize that other students might not know the content as well either but they are still trying. I also try to compromise with the student and meet them in the middle with something if they stay in the classroom with their classmates. If they still don't then we go try it in a totally different setting. Gotta give a little to receive a little :)

    1. I agree, build their confidence, let them know that they are not the only ones feeling that way.

      Delete
    2. Reassuring the student is always good because although they feel that they are the only ones that feels that way, they are not. Just like today students had to get up and give speeches and some of them were nervous. Well, they thought they were the only one nervous, but the teacher talked with the students and everyone was nervous to give the speech, but they knew it had to be done so they did it!

  5. I find that my students are not necessarily embarrassed about not knowing the material as well as others but they still prefer to go to another room where there are less distractions and they can concentrate better.

  6. Accommodations is something that meets it's need. Modification is small alteration, adjustment, or limitation.
It is okay to work with students who are not special education students? Yes it is okay to help other kids thats what were here for not only to help the ones that are assigned to us but all the kids.

    1. yes I agree we do need to help other students, if they are having trouble. we help other students in homeroom with their homework.

  7. According to the text, Accomodations are those things that help the student yet they reach the same outcome as their peers. Modifications, however, involve presentation, material, grading and assessments; the ourcome is different than their peers. Modifications are also more restrictive and are determined and made by the supervising teacher.

FAQ: Is it ok to work with students who are not in special education?
Yes, it is ok to work with other students. Our student(s) are the priority for us, but if they are not needing our help then we can help others. This also makes our students feel as if they are not being singled out and also makes all of the students realize that we all need help sometimes.

    1. When the special ed students sees you helping other students if makes them feel just a little bit better about themselves because they do see everyone needs a little help now and then.

    2. I like what you said about how we all need help sometimes. It's nice to know that we may all be unique & different but have that as a commonality. It helps to know you are not alone & you don't have to do it by yourself if you need help.

    3. I agree, the students are priority and I think as the gened students and the sped students get to know us it is easier for them to ask for some help.

    4. I totally agree with your statement about the students feeling like they are not be singled out. No one is perfect and we all need help from time to time and its good that the kiddos learn that.

  8. Accomodations are things that is provided for the student to enble them to learn better or make life easier for them.
Modifacations are an adjustment to the material, grading or assessments.
Our first obligation of course is to help our students but if they demonstrate they can handle the material on their own and others in the class need assistance it is ok to help them also.

    1. I agree that if our students have an understanding of the assignment, that we should help others in the class. I have seen paras who "hover" over students, and this creates more problems than it helps. I let the student dictate the kind and the amount of help that they need.

  9. Accommodations don't change what the student is expected to learn, the outcome is the same for every student.
Modifications do change what the student is expected to learn, objectives are modified to meet the needs of the learner, and the outcome sometimes is no the same.

Is it ok to work with students who are not in special education?
I think its fine for us to help regular ed students always making sure our sped kids get the help they need.

    1. Very well said. Helping students feel confidence from their accomplishments makes learning fun...not just for the student but you as well. And we all learn better when it's fun. We accomodate & modify for success.

  10. I learned from the text book that with accommodation, the outcome is the same for all students & they learn the same material but they arrive at it in a slightly different way. With modification it involves a change in the content or material that results in a different outcome where the student learns more on his level of understanding.

FAQ: How do I know if the activity has been adjusted too much or too little?
I start at the higher end of the expectation then adjust to easier, that way the student I am working with understands what level we are working toward. Since every student is so different you really have to use your judgement. Be encouraging & help them succeed in developing their learning skills & abilities.

    1. Denise,
It is a good idea to start with the harder work especially with students that seem a little lazy about their work. They seem to try harder for a little while when is hard and then they know is too hard. Otherwise, they just think is easy so they take their time or just work slower but know the work. Do encourage them they will always remember when you are persistent.

  11. ***Accommodations are done in the classroom. The teacher will find ways to better instruct the student. The teacher monitors the student and adjusts instruction, assignments and environment to meet needs of the student. This includes additional time, read to the student, oral clues to redirect student.
Modifications are more restricted. Modifications need to be done to the assignments and instruction to better benefit the student. The special education teacher modifies the curriculum, “(change assignments; change of grading)”, change amount of spelling words or math problems; “Adapting the materials so that a student is better able to understand and/or complete assignments, (Change of materials and assignments)”.
The accommodations and modifications are frequently readjusted to respond to student requirements. The results may not be the same as other students in the classroom. Sometimes, we may require manage an on-the-spot adjustment to the modification or accommodation for the student but can not make some changes without the teacher’s consent.
*What do I do if the student is unable to complete the assignment even with prompt’s and support?
Support the student but never complete their work. This is an indicator that the work is above the student comprehension level. Let the teacher know so they can make modifications to meet his needs.

    1. I mainly help 2 students. One student has accommodations to help with the completion of assignments. The other student has modifications made to help him learn the material he needs to know.

  12. The difference between accommodation and modification is the outcome/result. Accommodation, outcome is same, however the students achieve it in different ways. Modifications involve change in content & the outcome is different.
I do not feel comfortable in some classrooms because I do not know the subject material.
I have enjoyed getting to know 11th & 12th grade subject material. Yes it has been intimidating but I consider myself lucky to have the chance to re-learn everything I took for granted 20 some odd years ago....
I sit in on most lectures, read(or brush up on schoomp.com for any literature), take notes, browse instructional videos on MBC. If i can not help the students I have other resources to back me up. I look forward to the day when I know the subject matter inside & out!

    1. Kerri,
I think you are doing a great job. You have a willingness to learn and to help. You do not need to know everything to help these kids, sometimes you just need to know where to go or who to ask for the answer. Just stick to it and soon you will be comfortable in all classes!!

  13. The main difference between accommodations and modifications is the outcome or results. Accommodations are made so that all the students in the class get the same results. Some students may have to have the way they go about doing the assignment changed a bit but still end up with the same results as the rest of the class. Modifications are changes that are made for specific students because they are unable to complete, understand, or perform the assignment as the rest of the class. These changes will produce different outcomes than that of the rest of the class.
Is it okay to work with students who are not special education students? I know that my first priority is to the student(s) that I have been assigned. However, if I am in a position where I am able to help someone else, I will. I look at my job as a way to impact lives, hopefully for the better. I think, also, that I can set an example for the students. The more positive examples in these kiddos lives, the better. Also, its good to show that students can help each and learn from each other. I think when regular students work along side and help special ed students, the differences tend to fade awade and they become just another student helping another student.

  14. I would agree with those that differentiate between accommodations and modifications as to whether the outcome is changed. If not, it is an accommodation. If so, it is a modification. As a former gifted facilitator the question of not feeling comfortable in some classrooms because I did not know the subject matter happened often at the higher level math classes at the high school. Although my math skills did improve the longer I accelerated math with some students, I learned right along side them, trigonometry and calculus were totally out of my league. Luckily, the district employed a paraprofessional who lacked one class from having a bachelor's degree in mathematics. Whenever we came across a problem that we could not figure out we asked the para to help us out. The moral of this story is to use the resources around you. Not everyone has the same gifts, but everyone has something to offer.

    1. I like your comment "Not everyone has the same gifts, but everyone has something to offer." Sometimes my little ones get frusturated and just changing our surrounding and sometimes even switching paras for 30 minutes, gives them some renewed energy.

  15. The difference between accommodations and modifications is the end result. Accommodations will allow all the students to have the same end results, although they may use different means of getting to the end. Modifications allow the teacher to change the way he/she teaches specific students resulting in a totally different ending outcome.

FAQ: IS IT OKAY TO WORK WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS?
I work with Kindergarten only and there are times that other students ask me what they are supposed to do. I can't just ignore them, so I help in whatever way I can. My main proirity is my SpEd Students, so if my answering and helping the other students puts the SpEd students at risk, then I will tell them to go ask their teacher or another aide, or they can just simply wait until I am available.

    2. Erica, your answer is just what we believe at HPEC. Your main priority is the special education student that you are assigned to help, but if others need help and you are not busy you should help out.

  16. The difference between accommodations and modifications is in the outcome. Accommodations are made so that all the students in the class get the same results. Modifications will have changes made for some students so they can complete the work like the rest of their class.
Question: The students seems to be able to do the work independently, so what should i do durning the class period? I will go and check on the students to see how they are doing. If they are doing great i take the time to make notes, maybe go review what they are doing next week. But i will keep checking on the students.

  17. Accomodations are things you do in order to help child get done what they need to. For example, the student isn't able to eat with the skinny spoon that they are given in the cafeteria, so we give them a bigger spoon so they may eat the same food as everyone else, but with a bigger spoon because they can't grasp the small one.
Modification is when you actually change something. For example: The student has a behavior and explodes after completeling 10 of the 30 math problems. So that student gets to do 15 math problems instead of the whole 30 because it is less stress on them.

Question: Is it okay to work with students who are not in special education?
I do this every day. I work with my student, but they are in a group of students that are on the same level and so general education students get my help as well. This is ok as long as the general education students are not interfereing with the work that is supposed to be done with the student that is actually on the I.E.P.

  18. As it is explained in the text: the difference between accommodations and modifications it the outcome. Accommodations are simple changes that help students finish their assignments/activities on their own. However, modifications are part of the daily work: like assignments, materials, tests, etc. One example; the teacher can make modifications in an assignment by letting students use their calculator/notes, or simply by giving the students more time

Question:What do I do if the student is enable to complete the assignment even with prompts and support?
I would talk to the supervising teacher and let her know that the some parts of the assignment was still difficult for the student. This way she can figure out what would be the best accommodation for the student
